Quiz – Pedigreed Pitchers (solved)

The players in this quiz are the only pitchers since 1916 to achieve a certain game feat. What is this unusual pitching accomplishment?

Congratulations to Chris C and Insert Name Here! They teamed up to identify the players in the quiz as the only US-born pitchers who, in a regulation 9-inning (or longer) game since 1916, suffered a 1-0 CG loss on a home run, despite allowing no walks and no more than 3 hits. Cliff Lee and James Shields are the most recent additions to this club, with starts in the final week of this season and last. More after the jump.

Two other pitchers born outside the US also suffered this fate. These are the games for all 11 pitchers.

Does this Youmans game have something to do with it?

Based on nothing more than Voomo’s comment and Cliff Lee’s game last night I’ll guess:
CG, L, 13+K, H<=3

Ok with limited time I also searched through the unlikely Anthony Reyes. Best I can do until later.

CG, L, H<=3, 1R, 6+K

Ok, still thinking about this. Trying one last time.

CG, L, H<=3, BB=0, R=1

I think the Yeomans game from Voomo threw me off course (he walked 7 in that game). Found a different one with 0 BB as I saw with about 4 of the others. I don't have a search tool so doing this all manually. If I'm right there likely isn't a K requirement as one of the guys only had 3 in his game.

I’ve tracked 6 of the games and they all gave up a HR in their game. Hopefully that’s the last detail.

I have no idea about the pedigree clue.

I am also clueless about the “pedigree.” Many of them have a California connection, but not all of them…

____________

They have all lost a match to Hunter Hearst Helmsley.

Chris C,

Those are all the criteria – CG, L, R=1, HR=1, H<=3, BB=0

To solve the pedigree, consider what's different about the players in the quiz and others who have also pitched a game described by these criteria.

I don’t have a PI subscription so I can only see a few at a time, but the others to do this include Canadian-born Reggie Cleveland and Cuban-born Tommy de la Cruz. If we add the requirement of at least 8 IP, could it be that they are all American-born?

Besides Cleveland and de la Cruz, other pitchers who meet the requirements of post #11 are Dick Drago and Balor Moore.

Doug:
How about Youmans on 9/27/86 @ Montreal versus the Phillies:
CG 9IP 2H 1R/1ER 7BB 15K’s 34 batters faced.
The Expos stole 7 bases and still failed to score. That same season Youmans had several well-pitched games with game scores over 80.
Cliff Lee? Pounding the strike zone when ahead in the count 0-2 does have its consequences. And he does….relentlessly.
