Quiz – it ain’t over til … (solved)

In honor of Yogi‘s induction into the COG, a related quiz involving players who have a particular game accomplishment since 2012 that no other player has managed. What is it?

Or, maybe it is over? Congratulations to Richard Chester! He correctly identified that since 2012 only these players have produced the game-winning margin at the earliest possible moment, via a 1st inning lead-off home run on the road, en route to a shutout of the home team.  After the jump, more on getting ahead early and making it count.

Here are the games since 2012 when the visiting team has shut out the home side after a home run leading off the game.

One notable observation about the list of games above are the two times in 2013 that the Yankees suffered this fate. Those were the first occasions since 1967 and only the 5th and 6th times since 1914.

Mmmmm, not quite.
How about, getting a hit in consecutive games that were both extra inning games?

Most of those guys are leadoff types, so random guess (not that I know of any way to search for such a thing): a hit leading off the bottom of the 1st and a walk-off hit in the same game?

Maybe leading off the visiting first inning with a homer to make the score 1-0, then a walkoff hit to win the game?

There are no walk-offs for visiting teams.

I haven’t finished searching but how about leading off the game with a HR and his team won by a shutout.

Very difficult quiz, Doug. Jose Reyes’ presence on the list seems problematic to me with respect to the other names.

ReliefMan and John Nacca paved the way. I confirmed my results with a complicated spreadsheet analysis.

Good catch about the visiting team not being able to have a walk-off….I was entranced with the NFL draft when I posted that LOL. I had a feeling though it had something to do with the 1st inning.

The ol’ misdirection play! I wasted all my searches on game-ending events.

Doug: “the earliest possible moment” is the first pitch of the game. Only Parra and Rosales did that.

Actually my biggest takeaway was that the only 1-0 games were both against MIA
