Quiz – Sparkplugs (solved)

All of these players could spark an offense, but in a variety of different ways. So, what is the unusual batting feat that only they have achieved since 1914?

Congratulations to Voomo Zanzibar (mostly) and RJ! They teamed up to identify that the quiz players are the only AL batters since 1914 to have homered in four consecutive games at the top of the batting order. Those streaks and more are after the jump.

Here are all such streaks, in both leagues.

A couple of small asterisks:

  • Scott Hairston’s streak was interrupted by one homerless game in which he batted 6th
  • Dick McAuliffe’s streak was interrupted by one game that he didn’t play and another in which he pinch-hit (and didn’t homer) in the number 9 spot

As mentioned by our readers, Danny Tartabull’s streak came during his only stint batting leadoff, starting the 1986 season. Similar story for Jose Bautista who has batted leadoff for Toronto only over the last two weeks of the 2009 season and the first two weeks of the 2010 season (plus a handful of other scattered games in those two campaigns).

Is this a single season feat? Perhaps something these payers have done one season but never in another season (where other players may have done it multiple times)?

From the looks of the list, leading off games must be a part of it.

Danny Tartabull didn’t hit leadoff. He only had 15 career games started as a leadoff hitter.

Your statement is contradictory. He didn’t, but he did?

Maybe in those 15 games he accomplished the feat being asked for. All I meant was that it could very well be something having to do with batting in the lead off spot. And with 15 games starting in the lead off spot, it is definitely possible.

By “didn’t hit leadoff” I meant “wasn’t generally a leadoff hitter.”

If leading off is part of the answer, then it has to be Tartabull’s 1986 season as it is the only one in his career where he started any games as a leadoff batter.

I’m guessing it has to do with leading of an INNING, rather than a game. Just a thought.

tartabull hit a grand slam while batting leadoff — is that part of it?

I mean, I’ve only looked at the Tartabull game, but it has to be hitting a grand slam in the first inning while batting leadoff, doesn’t it? I’d imagine that happens relatively rarely, obviously only when the order goes around.

Yeah I just looked at two other players and discovered I was wrong.

Maybe it’s not a HR – does it have something to do with driving in more than one run in the first inning while batting leadoff?

Well, Doug used the Streak Finder, so…
Just looking at Tartabull, how about:

Homers in 4 consecutive games while batting leadoff

They’re all American League players. Don’t know if that’s just coincidence.

Interesting to note that for Bautista that streak was part of his very hot September of 2009. A harbinger of his 54HR season of 2010 he hit 10HR that month and 6 in the last 8 games all from the leadoff spot.

During Anderson’s streak he hit a leadoff HR in his first PA in each game. The O’s lost all 4.
