Four 1-0 games in one day?!? There was one other day this year with two such games. Last June 13 had three, as did 2010-09-11, 2009-07-01, 2004-09-19 and 2004-06-08. There were six in three days starting 2005-08-12. But if I’m not mistaken, the last day with four 1-0 games was 2001-09-02. (You’ll have to poke around to find which one of those was most memorable.)
__________
Chris Archer‘s 2-hit shutout of the Yankees was:
- The 5th walk-free shutout in Tampa history — three by James Shields, the other two by Archer in the last 2 weeks.
- Tampa’s first-ever individual shutout of the Yanks.
- Their third-ever 1-0 win against the Yanks.
- The 2nd straight time that Ivan Nova lost by shutout. He’s allowed 7 runs in 31 IP since rejoining the rotation.
- New York’s 9th straight game without a home run.
- Tampa’s 13th shutout this year, tied for #1 with Cleveland and Pittsburgh, and 2 short of last year’s club record.
__________
Cleveland’s 1-0 win behind Justin Masterson and Michael Bourn was:
- The first 1-0 loss to Cleveland by the Texas Rangers. The last such loss for the franchise was in 1971, the last year of the second Washington Senators.
- The first time since 2009 that a home team’s first-batter HR was the game’s lone run. (There was one game this year wherein a visiting leadoff HR stood up.)
- Cleveland’s fourth 1-0 win this year, tied with Pittsburgh
- Masterson’s 6th scoreless game of 7+ IP this year, tying Hiroki Kuroda for that lead.
- Yu Darvish’s 7th game this year with 10+ strikeouts, breaking a tie with Matt Harvey. Darvish has 15 such games the last 2 years, 6 more than any other. (Remember when the $112 million Texas committed to sign him for 6 years seemed exorbitant? What would he cost if he hit the open market this fall, just turned 27?)
- Cleveland’s 2nd searchable win when collecting 3 hits or less and at least 13 Ks. On April 21, 1954, the 4th home game ever for the Orioles, Bob Turley was 2 outs from a no-hitter, with a 1-0 lead and 13 Ks. But Al Rosen singled, Larry Doby homered, and Bob Lemon finished the 2-1 win. Doby would lead the AL with 32 HRs and 126 RBI, Lemon would lead with 23 wins, 2B Bobby Avila won the batting crown, and Cleveland set an AL record with 111 wins. Those three Indians dominated the MVP race, evenly splitting 15 of the 24 first-place votes (with 23-win teammate Early Wynn placing 6th). But Yogi Berra got 7 first-place votes, and snuck away with his 2nd MVP in one of the most jumbled races ever. Turley would notch 11 more CGs of 2 hits or less (four 1-hitters), but he never got the big one.
__________
- Chris Sale‘s 8th loss in his last 10 starts, with a 2.84 ERA in that span.
- The 4th time Chicago’s been shut out behind Sale. His run support is last in the majors, by game or by inning.
- Chicago’s 5th-ever 1-0 loss to K.C., and first since 1995. (The run in 1995 was driven home by Tom Goodwin, who had just 28 RBI in 537 PAs that year.)
- Chicago’s 2nd individual 9-IP, 1-0 loss in the last 16 years, and their first ever to the Royals.
- Greg Holland’s 19th straight save.
__________
The Cubs’ 1-0 win was:
- The 3rd shutout by the Cubs this year, lifting them from a last-place tie.
- The 8th time this year both starting pitchers went 7+ scoreless innings without a decision. There were only 6 such games last year, but 13 in each of 2010-11.
- The 2nd go-ahead HR in the 9th or later in 625 career games for Nate Schierholtz, both coming this month.
- The first NL win for Pedro Strop, who’s logged 11 scoreless outings with Chicago after pitching his way out of Baltimore.

I’m sure more nuggets could be mined, but I’m sleepy.
