And there’s even a Jack Morris dig! If only you could have blasted Joe Carter and Juan Pierre it would have been the bbref/HHS blog in a nutshell 🙂

Kidding aside, congrats Adam and HHS staff on getting in Sports Weekly

No Bichette hate? Park factors too socially accepted?

“The truth is, the Royals defense rated just about the same as the Rays’ last year.”

It’a also the truth that the Rays didn’t have Jeff Francoeur and his -2.1 dWAR in right field. Good luck to Davis and Shields.

But the KC defense had Francoeur in right field last year and STILL rated about the same as the Rays, so I’m not sure I understand your point, Doug.

It’s not like the metrics last year were excluding Frenchy in their team defense calculations.

My point is just you can’t hide a fielder as bad as Francoeur. He will be exposed, and your team will pay (a lot) for that exposure.

Thus, the whole is not the same as the sum of its parts. I’d much rather have competent fielders at every position and better than average ones at a few, than have a mix that arrives at the same total, but includes one or more awful fielders.

I still argue that a right fielder can’t hurt you that badly over the course of a season.

Is Francoeur really that bad? He had a bad year last season, but overall he’s +54 in Rfield for his career, including possibly the best arm in baseball (OK, basically all of those positive runs are from his arm, but that still makes him an average fielder without his hose.)

If you’re saying that Frency has hit the wall age-wise and is now too slow to be an average fielder out there, OK I get it. But I’d like to see one more year of data before I call him a bad outfielder.

You got me bstar,

Frenchy actually ranks 18th in Rfield among all right-fielders since 1901 (min. 1000 games played).

I rescind my aspersions (although having seen him in a couple of games last year, his play confirmed that -2.1 dWAR).

This time next year, I may agree with your initial statements. Frenchy is 29 years old and was never fast, so his range out there is going straight down from here on out.

He may end up being like Rick Ankiel–an OF who’s still in the league for his arm only.

Speaking of Morris, I’ve heard him, for the first time, doing color for the Blue Jays this week. Very polished and insightful commentary. And what a voice – the man was made for broadcasting.

He’s building his case for the HOF as a broadcaster if next year’s HOF leads to a fail!

Adam, great job, very concise.

Still early days, but so far, so good for Shields and Davis. In fact, the whole KC rotation has been pretty sharp, especially with control — 2nd-fewest walks and 2nd-best SO/BB among AL starters. Their rotation was 11th in SO/BB last season, and that was probably their best in many years.

I’ll say. That’s barely 300 words, shorter than some of my comments.

I’ve always believed that if someone couldn’t explain something in a fairly brief, reasonably easy to understand fashion, there’s a good chance they don’t really know what they’re talking about.

This took maybe a couple of minutes to read and yet when I was done I had both learned something new and understood something far better than I had before.

Very well done Adam.

Good stuff, Adam! I enjoyed how you related DRS to Morris and mentioned Trammell, Whitaker, and Lemon
