All shutout streaks of 3 or more since 1918

I had to separate this from the “…by decade” post, due to data limitations. Here are all individual shutout streaks of 3 or more since 1918. Streaks spanning years are included.

I still think El Tiante should be in the Hall but will admit that’s the Sox fan in me

14 and 16 hits over 36 innings and in ’72 he had 6 shutouts over an 8 game span, though DD had 6 in a row, which is insane

4 of those top streaks were in ’68

Nolan Ryan’s streak that spanned 76-77:

27 IP
7 H
17 BB
31 SO

Best WHIP in a shutout streak?

A rookie.
Woodie Fryman, 1966

27 IP
7 H
1 BB

All on the road, and they were his only shutouts of the year.

And speaking of shutout streaks, anyone notice that Aroldis Chapman is up to 33 innings, dating to last year?

…one unearned run in his first save opportunity.

Chapman has also not let an inherited runner score during his 33 inning scoreless streak. I hope the Reds continue to pitch him more than 1.0 innings at a time, but I’m a little worried about that. He had 6 1+ IP appearances before becoming the closer this year but only one since.

We have been getting Reds games all of a sudden from Fox Sportsnorth here in Tennessee so I have gotten to see the hot Reds quite a bit lately. JA, is that the actual rule? Does an unearned run stop a scoreless streak? If Chapman pitched 27 more scoreless innings, would he break Hershiser’s record?

Man, talk about running hot and cold…Ray Herbert had six shutouts at the all-star break in 1963 but an ERA of 3.42. In his eleven non-shutout starts his ERA was over 6.00.

there has to be a good chance Johnson, Alexander and/or Mathewson had a streak of 4 or more before ’18

Mathewson’s streak of three in the ’05 WS is worth mentioning:
27 IP / 0.519 WHIP / 6.7 SO/9

It is interesting to note note that #80 on the list, Walter Johson, pitched 36 innings to accomplish his 3 consecutive SO. One of his wins was an 18-inning job. So he pitched the equivalent of 4 consecutive SO games. Those 36 innings were embedded in a streak of 40 consecutive shut-out innings.
