Players traded twice together

On Twitter, @Minor_Leaguer (who writes for Bluebird Banter) asked about players who have been traded twice or more together. He cited Jeff Kent and Jose Vizcaino, who were both involved in the following trades:

July 29, 1996: Traded by the New York Mets with Jeff Kent to the Cleveland Indians for Carlos Baerga and Alvaro Espinoza.

November 13, 1996: Traded by the Cleveland Indians with a player to be named later, Jeff Kent and Julian Tavarez to the San Francisco Giants for a player to be named later and Matt Williams. The Cleveland Indians sent Joe Roa (December 16, 1996) to the San Francisco Giants to complete the trade. The San Francisco Giants sent Trent Hubbard (December 16, 1996) to the Cleveland Indians to complete the trade.

Can you think of any other examples of players who were traded together two or more times?

Javier Vazquez and Boone Logan were traded together twice, a year apart. The first time from the White Sox to the Braves and the second time from the Braves to the Yankees.

I had a couple of ideas but so far am coming up blank.

One interesting thing I noticed on Don Larsen’s page: not only was he a part of the famous 14 player New York-Baltimore trade but just a few years later he was involved in a 7 player trade and then an 8 player trade. I’m going to have to get my McMillian down off the shelf and do a little more searching.

As a Pirates fan, I immediately had a recollection of a trade with the Red Sox last decade, involving Freddy Sanchez. Eventually I ended up on Brandon Lyon’s B-R page, which probably best illustrates: – July 22, 2003: Traded by the Boston Red Sox with Anastacio Martinez to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Mike Gonzalez and Scott Sauerbeck. – July 31, 2003: Traded by the Pittsburgh Pirates with Anastacio Martinez and Jeff Suppan to the Boston Red Sox for Mike Gonzalez, Freddy Sanchez and cash. Probably not quite in the spirit of the post, since these two trades were obviously related,… Read more »

Found another! Bobo Newsom was traded with Red Kress twice: 1937 from Red Sox to Browns, and in 1939 from Browns to Tigers.

1 thing I remember about Bobo Newsom from a previous time he was mentioned on one of these posts is that you can’t see his whole pitching record on screen at the same time. I always have to “hide partial” or scroll down to see his totals. 🙂

Tom Morgan and Mickey McDermott were traded from the Yankees to the A’s on 2/19/57 and from the A’s to the Tigers on 11/20/57. There were other players involved in both trades.

Dick Allen and Jim Essian were traded for each other twice in the space of 5 months. But, what really happened is that Atlanta acquired and then traded away Allen, using Essian, acquired in the second trade, to complete the first trade. • December 3, 1974: Dick Allen traded by the Chicago White Sox to the Atlanta Braves for a player to be named later and cash. The Atlanta Braves sent Jim Essian (May 15, 1975) to the Chicago White Sox to complete the trade. • May 7, 1975: Dick Allen traded by the Atlanta Braves with Johnny Oates to… Read more »

If a guy is on both ends of a trade, i.e., traded for himself, does that count?

Probably not what Andy was looking for, but I’m cool with any excuse to mention Harry Chiti.

Other guys who were traded for themselves: Archie Cobin, Clint Courtney, John McDonald, Dickie Noles and Mark Ross.

Minor Leaguer

John McDonald was not technically traded for himself; it was two separate cash transactions between the Jays and Tigers.

Not really being traded for yourself, but in 1970 the Cubs managed to hold Hoyt Wilhelm for “ransom”, claiming him off waivers from Atlanta, and then forcing the Braves to give up Hal Breeden to get Wilhelm back.

Rickey Henderson was twice traded to acquire Eric Plunk. Something for Plunk to tell his grand-kids.

• December 5, 1984: Rickey Henderson traded by the Oakland Athletics with Bert Bradley and cash to the New York Yankees for Tim Birtsas, Jay Howell, Stan Javier, Eric Plunk and Jose Rijo.

• June 21, 1989: Rickey Henderson raded by the New York Yankees to the Oakland Athletics for Greg Cadaret, Eric Plunk and Luis Polonia.

Actually, Jose Rijo and Tim Birtsas were traded together twice…

December 5, 1984: [Jose Rijo] Traded by the New York Yankees with Tim Birtsas, Jay Howell, Stan Javier and Eric Plunk to the Oakland Athletics for Bert Bradley, Rickey Henderson and cash.

December 8, 1987: [Jose Rijo] Traded by the Oakland Athletics with Tim Birtsas to the Cincinnati Reds for Dave Parker.

Not exactly what Andy’s looking for, but Brad Ausmus was involved on both sides of a trade involving Doug Brocail. From Detroit to Houston FOR Brocail in 1996, then four years later, again from Detroit to Houston this time WITH Brocail…

I thought for sure some of those classic mid 90’s “swap meet” trades involving the Padres, Astros and Tigers would net a pair of players who were traded for each other twice, but the above was the closest I could find…

Ron Villone and Marc Newfield were traded together twice, in deadline day deals in consecutive seasons. • July 31, 1995: Ron Villone traded by the Seattle Mariners with Marc Newfield to the San Diego Padres for a player to be named later and Andy Benes. The San Diego Padres sent Greg Keagle (September 17, 1995) to the Seattle Mariners to complete the trade. • July 31, 1996: Ron Villone traded by the San Diego Padres with Bryce Florie and Marc Newfield to the Milwaukee Brewers for a player to be named later and Greg Vaughn. I can’t prove it using the B-Ref Transaction pages, but I’m pretty sure outfielder John-Ford Griffin and pitcher Jason Arnold were traded together from the Yankees to the A’s in mid-2002, and then traded together again from the A’s to the Blue Jays during the following offseason.

The Braves traded Willie Montañez to the Mets in a four-team trade in December 1977. Part of that trade involved the Mets sending John Milner to the Pirates.

Nearly four years later, on August 20, 1981, the Pirates traded Milner to the Expos for Montañez.

I imagine looking at the old KC/New York shuttle from the 1950’s would yield more than one example of this.

That’s how I found the info for my post #5. So far I have not found any others. Yankees co-owner Del Webb and A’s owner Arnold Johson were good buddies, they were both deep into real-estate. Johnson traded so many good players to the Yankees that the joke around the AL was that the Yankees were the only team with a minor league team in the majors.

Here’s a pair of trades with some As-Yankees shuttle involvement. Eddie Robinson and Jim Finigan were for each other in the first trade and were traded together in the second. In between these two trades, Robinson was traded from the Yankees back to the As in a separate transaction. • December 16, 1953: Eddie Robinson traded by the Philadelphia Athletics with Loren Babe, Harry Byrd, Tom Hamilton and Carmen Mauro to the New York Yankees for Don Bollweg, Jim Finigan, Johnny Gray, Vic Power, Bill Renna and Jim Robertson. • December 5, 1956: Eddie Robinson traded by the Kansas City… Read more »

Ernie Bowman and Lou Klimchock: a) September 25, 1965: The Braves sent Bowman and Klimchock to the Mets as PTBNLs to complete a trade made on August 5, 1965, for Billy Cowan. b) October 12, 1966: Traded by the Mets to the Indians for Floyd Weaver. Bill Wight and Hoot Evers were twice traded for each other, in deals involving four different teams.

Jun 1952: between Red Sox (Bill Wight, Walt Dropo, Fred Hatfield, Don Lenhardt and Johnny Pesky) and Tigers (Hoot Evers, George Kell, Johnny Lipon and Dizzy Trout)

Jul 1955: between Orioles (Hoot Evers) and Indians (Bill Wight)

That 1952 trade was a big one. Who would have thought the Red Sox would trade Pesky. Actually most of those players’ best years were behind them.
