After the jump is a test morph of two Dave Parker cards. Might take a minute to load. Let me know what you think.
Restating the incredibly obvious about Dave Parker, it’s that big crater in the middle of his career caused by drugs (particularly the half-seasons of 1981/82), the hurt his HOF chances. Both his career and peak are very good but not quite solidly HOF-worthy. If you assume a normal career projection, and fill in the missing numbers for his “crater” period, he’d probably have been elected in his first few years, as he would’ve passed (or come close) to such career milestones as 3000 hits, 400 HR, and 1600 RBI, plus his peak would be more extended. 2011 was his last… Read more »
Jimbo,
Well, 1600 RBI isn’t like 3000 hits or 500 HR as a milestone, but it’s another positive point on his resume. The only players w/1600+ RBI (31 total) not in the HOF are Harold Baines and Rafeal Palmeiro. Baines is seen as a compiler, and Raffy’s exclusion is for PEDS, not performance.
So, while it’s not automatic, it would be a pretty strong positive.
Just the other day, Bill James, on his website, said that he considers Dave Parker to be at about the baseline for the Hall of Fame. Here’s the quote (and he’s responding to Tom Tango in the post, which is pretty interesting, too):
“My argument is, at the level of Dave Parker, I don’t have any issues about a player being a Hall of Famer. Below that line, its questionable to me.”
1: Nice morph, although it leaves me with card based question for Andy or any other card buffs; sorry non card buffs … Are both cards from two different 1988 Topps sets? It looks like the regular 1988 set and a 1988 update set. The beard could have been grown between seasons and trades, and I guess his body shape is about the same if you consider the distance the photographers were at. I have just been through my childhood collection, which includes 60%+ plus of the regular 1988 Topps set (all from corner store waxpacks)… Anyone have any good… Read more »
Thanks John A.@19 & Andy @20. wow, card numbers and everything.
Thinking about it, I guess it was a bit lazy of me to ask instead of spending a few moments image searching… And on that note, I guess i haven’t really spent much time on CheckOutMyCards, maybe bicycle spokes will be safe after all from my cheap late 1980s cardboard.
